Enlighten Teeth Whitening

What sets our Enlighten teeth whitening apart?

Most whitening treatments tell you how much brighter your teeth will get, but very few tell you where they will stop.

Porcelain and composite do not respond to whitening gel, so if you have veneers, crowns or bonding in place or planned, the shade your natural teeth settle on decides how well everything else matches. If you get that wrong, the fix is a new restoration.

Enlighten® is built around a predictable end point rather than a dramatic jump. Dr Joe Oliver (GDC No. 62456) has spent more than 30 years matching restorations to natural teeth at our Mayfair clinic, and he recommends it to patients planning cosmetic work for its shade control.

WHAT IS ENLIGHTEN TEETH WHITENING

Enlighten is a take-home whitening system dispensed by dental practices, combining custom-made trays with a course of gel worn over three weeks.

Its reputation rests on shade predictability. Enlighten reports that 98% of cases reach shade B1, the lightest shade on the standard dental shade guide, and states this holds regardless of age, diet or starting shade.

A high-street kit uses a stronger gel for a short burst that lifts surface stains quickly, then stalls. Enlighten runs a gentler gel over a far longer contact time, so the change happens deeper in the tooth rather than on its surface. That is also why sensitivity tends to be lower on a longer course than a shorter, harsher one.

We're an honest team that deals in transparency, so we'll tell you at your consultation what to expect. Tetracycline banding, white spot lesions and other discoloured teeth respond differently to everyday surface staining, and no whitening system changes that.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM
ENLIGHTEN TREATMENT

Treatment opens with an assessment of your enamel, gums and current shade. We take a scan or impression and have your trays made to fit, which is the difference between a dispensed system and a shop-bought kit: the gel stays on the tooth, not the gum.

The course itself runs over three weeks for most patients.

  • Weeks one and two – You wear the trays overnight, every night. Most of the shade change happens here.
  • Week three – You switch to a lower-strength daytime gel for about an hour a day over 7 days. This stage evens out the result and settles the final shade.
  • Review – We check the outcome against the shade we recorded at the start, then plan any restorative work from there.

Complex cases can run longer. Enlighten allows up to eight weeks, and roughly one patient in 20 needs the extra time.

A desensitising pen comes with the kit. Around 2% of patients get sensitivity they notice, and it settles once the course finishes.

HOW MUCH DOES
ENLIGHTEN TEETH WHITENING COST?

Enlighten teeth whitening costs £695 at our Mayfair clinic, which covers your custom trays and the full course of gel.

It sits at the top of our take-home range. Our Opalescence and Dental White Beauty home kits are £395, and the £300 difference buys shade predictability rather than speed.

If speed is what you're seeking, Philips Zoom® whitening is the in-clinic route and lifts shade inside a single 90-minute appointment. Zoom does its work in one visit. Enlighten works over three weeks towards a defined end shade. They answer different questions, and our professional teeth whitening page lays out every option side by side.

Cosmetic consultations are £125, virtual or in clinic, and include a visual simulation of your new smile. Finance is available through Chrysalis Finance if you are combining whitening with other treatments. Our fees page offers all the information you need.

IS
ENLIGHTEN RIGHT FOR YOU?

Enlighten suits you if you want a specific end shade and can commit to wearing trays every night for a fortnight.

It works well for:

  • Yellowing from age, coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco
  • Patients planning veneers, crowns or composite bonding, where the natural shade needs settling before anything is matched to it
  • Anyone who has tried a shop-bought kit and seen little change

It is the wrong choice if:

  • You need a result before an event next week.
  • Your front teeth are already restored. Existing porcelain and composite stay the shade they were made, so matching may mean replacing them. We will flag that before you start, not after.
  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding, or under 18.

If the assessment suggests you sit in the 2% who will not reach B1, we say so at the consultation rather than at the end of a £695 course. In those cases, the sensible route is usually whitening to whatever shade your teeth will hold, then treating the teeth that remain out of step.

ENLIGHTEN TEETH WHITENING REVIEWS AND REALISTIC RESULTS

Patients researching Enlighten reviews usually want one question answered: does it actually reach B1?

For most people, it does. The trays must be worn every night through weeks one and two. Any skipped nights will show up in the final shade, and they’re the most common reason a course underperforms.

This is why we record your starting shade on a standard guide at the consultation. The result is then measured, and you can see exactly what the course achieved.

BOOK YOUR ENLIGHTEN TEETH WHITENING CONSULTATION

Enlighten works best when it is planned alongside whatever comes after it, rather than bolted on afterwards. If veneers, crowns or bonding are on the table, whitening first gives us the shade to match everything else to.

Book a consultation at our Mayfair clinic on 020 7770 6441, or get in touch online. We will assess your suitability, record your starting shade, and tell you whether Enlighten or a single-visit alternative fits what you actually want.

How does the Enlighten B1 shade guarantee work?

Enlighten states that 98% of cases reach shade B1, the lightest shade on the standard guide, when the complete system is used as directed. It is a manufacturer claim conditional on following the protocol, not an unconditional promise from us. At your consultation, we will tell you how likely B1 is for your teeth specifically.

How long does Enlighten teeth whitening take?

Three weeks for around 95% of patients. This involves wearing overnight trays for the first fortnight, then a daytime gel for an hour a day across seven days.

Does Enlighten whitening cause sensitivity?

Most patients report none, or mild sensitivity that passes. Around 2% experience something more noticeable, and it resolves once the course ends. A desensitising pen is included in the kit.

Will Enlighten whiten my crowns, veneers or bonding?

No. Whitening gel only works on natural tooth structure. Existing porcelain and composite hold the shade they were made in, which is why we whiten first and match restorations afterwards. If your current work is already a shade you dislike, replacement may be better than whitening, and composite veneers are one possible route.

Can I eat and drink normally during the course?

Mostly, yes, though the teeth take up colour more readily while a course is running. We ask patients to go easy on red wine, curry, tomato sauces, tea and coffee through the three weeks, and to brush after them where you can. Smoking during a course will hold the final shade back.

How long should I wait between whitening and bonding?

Around two weeks. The shade lifts slightly further and then settles after the final gel, and bonding matched too early can end up looking darker than the teeth around it once everything stabilises. Booking the restorative appointment a fortnight after your last tray night avoids that.

How long do Enlighten results last?

Indefinitely, with top-ups. Enlighten recommends a maintenance schedule that tapers from monthly to roughly every six months, using gel from your existing kit. Coffee, red wine and smoking shorten the interval.

What are the pros and cons of Enlighten whitening?

Pros

  • A predictable end shade, which is what matters when restorations follow
  • Works on age-related and dietary staining that shop-bought kits do not shift
  • Results held with occasional top-ups rather than repeat courses

Cons

  • A three-week commitment, and nightly compliance decides the result
  • £695, at the top of our take-home range
  • No effect on existing crowns, veneers or bonding
