WHAT ARE
DENTAL CROWNS?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that fits over a damaged tooth. It restores the tooth's shape, size and strength, and functions like a natural tooth when bonded into place.
There are different crown materials available. Porcelain and ceramic (zirconia) are most popular for the front teeth that are visible when you smile.
We specialise in porcelain crowns, as they match the colour of tooth enamel best, and avoid grey lines at the gumline, ensuring your teeth look natural. They're also the best choice if the patient has a metal allergy.
Metal crowns, or combination types, are typically used for the back teeth, where bite pressure is higher.
WHY WOULD YOU NEED A
DENTAL CROWN
-
Dental crowns are used when a tooth has been damaged beyond what a filling or composite bonding can repair, including:
- Damaged teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Broken teeth
- A tooth is being used to anchor a dental bridge
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING DENTAL CROWN TREATMENT
When it comes to dental crowns, London patients can expect treatment to take at least two visits to our clinic.
During your first visit, we'll prepare the tooth by reshaping it so your new crown sits correctly. A local anaesthesia is used to numb the area and prevent pain. We will also take an impression of your teeth to ensure your new custom crown is a precise fit. A temporary crown will be placed while your permanent crown is being made at a specialised dental lab.
At your second visit, the temporary crown is removed, and your new bespoke crown is bonded in place over the reshaped tooth. Your cosmetic dentist will then check the fit to make sure it functions as it should, ensuring a comfortable fit with the rest of your natural teeth.

What Is The Difference Between Crowns And Bridges?
-
Although bridges and crowns are often used together, they are two very different treatments.
- A crown is used to cover an existing single tooth, concealing any damage without the need for extraction.
- A bridge, on the other hand, is used to "bridge" the gap left by one or more missing teeth - it requires a healthy tooth on either side of the gap to help support the replacement tooth. These teeth are known as abutments.
-
If you think you may require dental bridges or crowns, you can trust you're in capable hands with our cosmetic dentists.
How Long Is The Dental Crown Procedure?
The dental crown procedure occurs over two appointments over 1 to 2 weeks, with each appointment lasting around an hour. However, this may vary based on your individual case.
Are Dental Crowns Painful?
You shouldn't feel pain during treatment as a local anaesthetic is used to make the process more comfortable.
Most patients can resume routine activities immediately after crown placement; however, you may experience mild sensitivity.
This usually subsides within a couple of weeks, but if necessary, over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen and paracetamol can be taken to alleviate discomfort following your treatment.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Last?
-
Porcelain dental crowns are extremely durable - with proper care, dental crowns can last for up to 15 years or more. You can help your new crown last by:
- Maintaining good oral health - brushing your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, rinsing with mouthwash and flossing after meals.
- Attend regular dental check-ups - this ensures a dentist can monitor the condition of your crown and the tooth underneath.
- Avoiding hard, crunchy or chewy foods that could damage your new crown.
-
Our cosmetic dentists will advise you on the lifespan of your crown and how best to maintain it.
Which Dental Crown Material Is Best?
Porcelain crowns are our choice for covering weak or broken teeth as they're tooth coloured and mimic natural enamel effortlessly.
Ceramic crowns are another good option and resemble real teeth, although they aren't as durable as porcelain types.
Metal crowns are highly robust, but are mostly used for back teeth where bite force is strong.
Am I Suitable For A Dental Crown?
-
Most patients with damaged teeth are suitable for dental crown treatment in London; however, you might not be suitable for a tooth cap if you have:
- Tooth decay
- Gum disease
- Enamel erosion
- Functional bite problems
-
These issues will need to be addressed before any cosmetic dental work can go ahead.
If you're unsure whether a tooth crown is the right option, Dr Joe Oliver will assess your suitability thoroughly at your initial consultation and advise on the best treatment for your case.
