TYPES OF DENTAL BRIDGES

Bridges are dental restorations that fill gaps created by missing teeth, custom-made just for you - matching the shade of your natural teeth. They generally come in four types:

Traditional bridges

When used to replace missing teeth, a traditional dental bridge consists of two crowns (caps) – one on each end - with an artificial tooth/teeth in the middle. The dental crowns are bonded to your natural teeth (abutment teeth) on either side, and the artificial teeth bridge the gap.

Adhesive bridges

If the rest of your teeth are strong and healthy, your dentist may recommend an adhesive bridge, which is a false tooth with 'wings' on either side of it. These wings can be bonded to the inner surfaces of your supporting teeth, without needing to prepare the neighbouring teeth for full-coverage dental crowns. This is almost always used for the front existing teeth.

Cantilever bridge

A cantilever dental bridge has a crown on one end, not both - making it ideal for patients who only have natural teeth on one side of the gap.

Implant-supported bridge

Implant-supported dental bridges are another option for patients looking to replace one or more teeth in a row. Unlike traditional bridges, these are attached to dental implants inserted where the tooth root would have originally been.

What happens during a dental bridge procedure?

During your initial consultation, our cosmetic dentists will examine your teeth, talk you through the different dental bridges available, and recommend the most suitable treatment option for your dental health needs.

We'll also discuss the cost of dental bridges, including the various payment options we offer to help make your treatment more accessible.

On your second visit to our London cosmetic dental clinic, our dentists remove a small amount of tooth enamel from your abutment teeth. We will administer a local anaesthetic to ensure a more comfortable experience. We'll take all the precise impressions of your teeth we need and send them to the lab, where a technician will create your custom bridge. In the meantime, you'll be given a temporary bridge to wear.

When you next visit us, we will remove your temporary dental bridge and check the fit of your new fixed bridge before bonding it in place.

Does dental bridge treatment hurt?

The procedure for placing dental bridges is generally pain-free for most patients.

We numb the area with local anaesthetic to ensure minimal discomfort throughout the treatment.

Following the placement of a dental bridge, it's normal to experience some gum soreness and slight sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks. This usually subsides within a few days and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief, such as paracetamol.

How long does a tooth bridge last?

Dental bridges can last between 10-15 years.

However, their exact longevity often depends on your oral hygiene and lifestyle habits – not to mention the quality of the tooth bridge.

Cheaper dental bridges are often lower quality and don’t last as long as those made from high-quality materials.

Naturally, your back teeth undergo more wear and tear than your front teeth, so bridges used for molars usually have a shorter lifespan.

Poor oral hygiene can also reduce the lifespan of a tooth bridge and increase your risk of developing decay and other infections.

To prolong the longevity of your dental bridges, you must:

  • Maintain good oral hygiene – brushing twice a day and flossing daily will keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy.
  • Eat and drink in moderation – limiting your consumption of sugary, hard, or chewy foods will prevent decay and minimise wear and tear.
  • Quit bad habits – smoking, biting your nails, and crunching ice cubes can damage your natural teeth and bridges, so it’s best to avoid them.
  • Protect your teeth – if you clench or grind your teeth in your sleep or play contact sports, wearing a mouthguard will help your dental bridges last longer.
  • Attend regular check-ups – visiting the dentist for routine appointments every six months, and a hygienist in the interim for a scale and polish, will keep your mouth healthy and allow us to check your bridge is functioning properly.

How Do I Care For My Dental Bridges?

To care for and prolong the longevity of your dental bridges, you must:
  • Maintain good oral hygiene – Regular brushing twice a day and flossing daily will keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy.
  • Eat and drink in moderation – limiting your consumption of sugary, hard, or chewy foods will prevent decay and minimise wear and tear.
  • Quit bad habits – smoking, biting your nails, and crunching ice cubes can damage your natural teeth and bridges, so it's best to avoid them.

Will A Dental Bridge Affect The Teeth On Either Side?

This depends on the type of dental bridge. Traditional dental bridges require the teeth on either side of the gap to be shaped down to allow crowns to fit over them, which is permanent. However, adhesive bridges are bonded to the back surface of healthy adjacent teeth without the need to remove enamel.

At your dental bridge consultation, Dr Oliver will assess your teeth and recommend the best approach for your case and create a custom-designed treatment plan for you.

Is A Dental Bridge Removable Or Permanent?

Traditional types are a permanent bridge, meaning they're bonded in place and cannot be taken out. As no enamel is removed in the process, adhesive bridges are a less invasive option, and your dentist can debond if needed. However, you can't take them out yourself like removable dentures.

Do Dental Bridges Need Replacing?

Dental bridges are incredibly durable and long-lasting, but they typically need replacing between 10 and 15 years, or if they’ve been damaged beyond repair.

They can fail due to impact from teeth grinding, bond material loosening or if tooth decay affects the abutment teeth. At routine dental checks, your dentist will spot signs of loose bonding or decay and address the issues before they develop into bigger problems.

If they need to be replaced, the process is straightforward in most cases.
