GUM DISEASE TREATMENT IN LONDON
Gums that bleed when you brush, breath that stays stale no matter how often you clean, and teeth that feel slightly looser than they used to. These are often the first signs of gum disease, and many patients often ignore them as they rarely hurt.
At The Oliver Clinic Cosmetic Dental Clinic, we offer gum disease treatment to stop the infection from progressing and protect your teeth and supporting bone. Our periodontist in London will show you exactly what they find during an initial examination and agree on a plan with you before any treatment begins.
WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?
Gum disease is an infection of the tissue and bone that support your teeth, caused by a build-up of bacteria called plaque. It's the leading cause of tooth loss in adults
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and is fully reversible with professional cleaning and good oral hygiene practices. However, untreated gum disease can allow bacteria to reach below the gum line, which can lead to periodontitis.
Periodontitis is advanced gum disease and can have serious impacts on your oral health. During this stage, the bone and tissue holding your teeth in place are weakened and destroyed, leading to loose teeth or tooth loss. Advanced periodontal disease can't be cured, but it can be controlled.
HOW WE TREAT GUM DISEASE
- Gum health assessment - Your dentist will examine your gums, measure the pockets around each tooth and take X-rays to check for bone loss.
- Cleaning and home care - For gingivitis, deep cleaning and improved oral hygiene at home are enough to clear the infection and make your gums healthy again.
- Deep cleaning below the gum line - Periodontitis needs a deeper periodontal treatment to prevent it from worsening and protect your remaining healthy teeth. Under local anaesthetic, we remove hardened plaque and bacteria from the root surfaces inside the gum pockets, a process known as scaling and root planing. Each session lasts 60 to 75 minutes.

What are the causes of gum disease?
Gum disease is mostly caused by plaque buildup - this is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth if you don't brush and floss your teeth regularly.
Smoking, poor oral hygiene, hormonal changes and medical conditions such as diabetes are all risk factors that can cause gum disease.
Does periodontal disease treatment hurt?
As a local anaesthetic is used to numb the area, gum disease treatment shouldn't generally be painful. You may feel a slight pressure or vibrations during deep cleaning, and your gums may be tender for a few days afterwards.

Can you prevent gum disease?
Yes, you can prevent the early stages of gum disease by doing the following:
- Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
- Floss between your teeth after eating to remove food debris
- See a dentist for regular dental checkups and a dental hygienist for professional cleaning
It also helps to avoid using mouthwash straight after brushing and avoid smoking.
Why do my gums bleed when I brush?
Bleeding when you brush is usually a sign of gingivitis, where plaque building up along the gum line has made your gums inflamed. If left untreated, it can develop into periodontitis.
Keep brushing and cleaning between your teeth, even where they bleed, as avoiding those areas enables more plaque build-up. If the bleeding carries on for more than a week or two, book in to see one of our dentists.
