What is a narrow gummy smile?
A gummy smile is when too much gum tissue is showing above your upper teeth when you smile - typically, more than 2mm of exposed gum showing is considered to be ‘gummy’.
If the dental arch is too narrow, it makes the teeth appear crowded and small, and showcases how the smile is not wide enough across the face.
Together, both create a narrow gummy smile which looks restricted and gum-heavy. While this isn’t harmful, many patients who come to us for treatment are self-conscious about their smile and the disproportionate amount of gum showing.
What causes a narrow gummy smile?
• Excessive gum tissue (Gingival hypertrophy) - Due to genetics, some gums are naturally longer.
• Teeth that didn’t completely erupt - Instead of the tooth coming through fully, the tooth is left covered by gum tissue, making it look shorter than it actually is.
• Jaw development - Overgrowth of the upper jaw can cause the gums to protrude, displaying more gum when smiling.
• Narrow arch development - The upper jaw can develop naturally narrow, which restricts the width of your smile.
• Hyperactive upper lip - The muscle in the upper lip causes it to lift too high, exposing more gum when smiling.
• Shorter upper lip - Your lip is too short to cover your gums.
• Teeth grinding - Wear of the teeth can impact the tooth-to-gum ratio, making the gums appear larger.
