Porcelain Veneers Vs Composite Veneers: What’s the Difference?

You know you want veneers, but which type is right for you? When it comes to porcelain veneers vs composite veneers, the differences go well beyond price. Treatment time, longevity, reversibility, and how each option behaves in the dental chair are all factors that matter. This guide sets them out clearly, so you can walk into your consultation informed.

Dr Joe Oliver has spent over 35 years fitting veneers at The Oliver Cosmetic Dental Clinic in Mayfair, London, and has carried out more than 40,000 veneer treatments. His assessment of both options is reflected throughout this comparison.

The Key Differences at a Glance

The table below covers the most important factors patients consider when choosing between porcelain and composite veneers.

Longevity: How Long Does Each Option Last?

Longevity is one of the clearest points of difference between the two treatments.

With good oral hygiene and regular hygienist appointments, porcelain veneers can last 20 years or more. Dr Oliver has patients whose veneers have lasted well beyond 25 years, a result of both the quality of materials used and the precision of the fitting process. Porcelain is also highly resistant to staining, which means your smile stays brighter for longer.

Composite veneers typically last between 4 and 7 years. The resin material is more susceptible to staining and wear than porcelain, and may need refreshing within that period, particularly for patients who regularly consume tea, coffee, red wine, or other staining foods and drinks.

To protect either type of veneer, Dr Oliver advises maintaining good oral hygiene, attending regular hygienist appointments, and avoiding habits that place excessive pressure on your teeth — such as nail biting or teeth grinding. If you grind your teeth, a nightguard may be recommended.

Cost: What Does Each Option Involve?

The true cost comparison between porcelain and composite veneers depends on how you look at the investment.

Composite veneers have a lower upfront cost, from £195 per tooth at The Oliver Cosmetic Dental Clinic, and can be completed in a single appointment. However, they typically need refreshing or replacing every four to seven years.

Porcelain veneers start from £895 per tooth at The Oliver Cosmetic Dental Clinic. They require multiple appointments and involve laboratory crafting costs, but offer a lifespan that can be three to four times longer than composite. Patients who want a long-term result often find porcelain the more cost-effective choice over time.

Flexible finance options are also available at The Oliver Clinic, allowing patients to spread the cost of treatment into manageable monthly payments.

Aftercare Requirements

Porcelain Veneers

In the 48 hours following fitting, avoid hard or sticky foods and very hot or cold drinks. Ongoing care involves brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush, flossing daily, attending routine check-ups, and scheduling regular professional cleans with a hygienist.

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers benefit from the same daily oral hygiene routine. Because the resin material is more susceptible to staining, patients are also advised to avoid or limit staining foods and drinks and to have the bonding professionally polished periodically. If whitening is planned, it should always be carried out before the composite is applied, once in place, the resin will not respond to whitening treatment.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Rather than prescribing a single answer, the best veneer for your teeth depends on your individual circumstances. For a definitive, personalised recommendation, use our companion guide: What Is the Best Veneer for Teeth?

As a starting point:

  • If you want the longest-lasting, most stain-resistant result and are ready to commit permanently, porcelain veneers are the premium option
  • If you want a reversible, single-session treatment at a lower entry cost, composite veneers are an excellent alternative
  • If you are undecided, composite bonding can be a useful first step,  allowing you to trial a new smile before committing to porcelain
