The process of assessing and fixing your teeth typically takes two appointments. During the first appointment your dentist will prepare your teeth, take impressions and may fit temporary veneers. Your permanent veneers are crafted in a dental lab to the specifications agreed at your consultation.
At your second appointment your permanent veneers are bonded in place, checked for fit and bite and adjusted so everything looks and feels right.
If your teeth have been worn down by grinding, your dentist may also discuss whether a protective night guard is necessary to protect your teeth in the future.

What are the symptoms of chipped or worn teeth?
Whether the damage to your teeth came from an impact or gradual wear, you’ll notice a lot of the same signs and symptoms. The most common are a jagged or rough edge when you run your tongue across your teeth. Your teeth may feel more sensitive to hot, cold or sweet food and drinks, or you may experience discomfort when biting. Or you may notice that your teeth look shorter or uneven.
What’s the difference between a chipped and cracked tooth?
A chipped tooth happens when a fragment of enamel breaks away from the surface of your tooth, usually containing the damage to the outer layer. The severity of chips can vary from relatively minor edge damage to larger breaks that can expose sensitive tissue.
A cracked tooth is a break that goes through your tooth, rather than just across the surface. You might not always be able to see a crack just by looking, which can make them harder to find and potentially more serious. Cracks left untreated can worsen, potentially resulting in infection or your tooth splitting.
Whichever condition your teeth have, you’ll need a dental assessment to figure out the extent of the damage and the right course of treatment.
What are the risks from chipped or worn teeth?
Leaving a chipped or worn tooth untreated has consequences beyond just cosmetics. Even if the damage appears minor, it can worsen over time, resulting in increased sensitivity or pain, infection or structural weakness in your tooth. In more severe cases, bacteria can enter the exposed tooth and cause decay or abscesses, which can result in complications and more complex treatment later on.
Will porcelain veneers work if my tooth is badly chipped?
Porcelain veneers are suitable for a wide range of tooth damage, but it will depend on the extent. If a large portion of your tooth has broken away, your dentist will check whether the remaining tooth is strong enough to support a veneer or whether you may need to take a different approach.
Do I need to do anything about the cause of my chipped teeth before getting veneers?
If a chipped tooth is the result of persistent grinding, then yes we can discuss options to deal with this during your consultation. Continuing to grind your teeth after we’ve placed a veneer over them could result in more damage in the future. Your dentist may recommend a protective guard to wear at night alongside your veneers.
How soon after chipping a tooth can I get porcelain veneers?
In most cases you can get veneers over a chipped or worn tooth straightaway. If your tooth is sensitive or causing you any discomfort we can prioritise your appointment. Even if it’s purely cosmetic, we can still get you booked in quickly at a time that suits you.
